This week the Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process continues, as Mr. Peter Weiderud, Director of the Swedish Institute Alexandria (SwedAlex) and Moderator of the Religious Track Peace Process will meet Mr. Shaun Casey, United States Special Representative for Religion and Global Affairs.
Special Representative Casey will be in Cyprus from March 5 through 10, 2016, to meet with religious leaders, including Archbishop Chrysostomos, Mufti Atalay, Maronite Archbishop Yousef Soueif, the Latin Vicar of Cyprus Father Jerzy Kraj, and Father Momig Habeshian of the Armenian Orthodox Church, representing Archbishop Nareg. He will also visit holy sites and meet members of the religious communities and civil society.
As part of his visit, Mr. Casey will also meet with the Religious Track participants and learn about their important work under the auspices of the Swedish Embassy.
The Religious Track of the Cyprus Peace Process brought together the religious leaders of Cyprus for the first time since the conflict started in 1963 in a comprehensive dialogue in 2009. Since then significant progress has been made to improve religious freedom and to seek a constructive role for religious leaders in the Cyprus Peace process.
Since April 2015 SwedAlex is actively taking part in the work of the Religious Track, primarily through its Director as Moderator. At the same time the new Turkish Cypriot Leader Mustafa Akinci was elected, which brought new momentum to the political dialogue in Cyprus and also paved the way for more active results of the Religious Track.
