SwedAlex Celebrating International Women’s Day

As part of its WOMEN X programme, the Swedish Institute Alexandria (SwedAlex) is holding a series of events in Alexandria and Stockholm in celebration of the International Women’s Day March 8th. WOMEN X consists of different events with different angles that expand space for dialogue for women of different ages and backgrounds to be empowered to speak about their experiences.

 

 “Black” Theatre Performance

Starting on Thursday March 3rd, in the first event to commemorate International Women’s Day, SwedAlex will be hosting a theatre performance entitled “Black,” part of “Multicolored Blood”, a project by Alexandrian theatre director “Tarek Nader” and produced by “Vice Versa Arts and Theatre.” This unique theatre performance features six girls who differ in age and life experiences, but they share the same daily circumstances in which the modern Egyptian girl goes through in her daily life. In “Black” the girls will talk about what they face in society, and express freely their thoughts in a process of self-discovery.

Talk on the Power of Arts

On March 7th, Deputy Director of the Swedish Institute Alexandria Javeria Rizvi-Kabani will take part in a discussion on “The Power of the Arts in the Middle East.” Moderated by the prominent media figure Mikael Olsson Al Safandi, this interesting discussion will take place in the House of Culture in Stockholm, with other participants including Palestinian iconic singer Rim Banna, Sudanese cartoonist Khalid Albaih, and Syrian poet Ghayath Almadhoun.

Women Empowerment through Legislation

On the International Women’s’ Day 8th of March, SwedAlex in collaboration with ACT Egypt are organizing a workshop for civil society organizations and the National Council of Women to discuss how to empower Women Rights through legislation.

Participants will present suggested modifications of the Egyptian family law and the proposed law of Violence against Women, in addition to a presentation by Shoft Taharosh (I Saw Harassment) organization which is specialized in combating sexual harassment. The final session of the day will be an open discussion on how to achieve gender equality. Participants will share their different experiences on women empowerment.
