This week the Swedish Institute Alexandria (SwedAlex) is hosting a media management course entitled “Women in News,” organized by the World Association of Newspapers (WAN-IFRA), and the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (Sida).
This programme developed by WAN-IFRA aims at implementing a 4-year gender and media freedom strategy, that seeks to bring about greater gender equality in the media and society at the individual level. This is achieved through comprehensive skills development activities (training, coaching, mentoring and networking), and throughout the organizations and industry using advocacy efforts to educate and sensitize media executives. The programme was launched in South Africa in January of this year, and SwedAlex will host its launching in the MENA region.
Senior journalists and editors representing media organizations from Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, and Palestine will take part in this course, which will be the first week of a two week certified media management programme. It is an introduction to management with a special focus on increasing the representation of women in senior leadership. The course will cover several topics, such as leadership in media, principles of management, human resources and marketing.
The training will include guest lecturers from different parts of the region (senior women media professionals), as well as networking events and other side events to encourage dialogue and skills exchange.
